2027 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV revealed: 860kW, a fake V8 sound and is it coming to Australia?

Mercedes-AMG's first ground up SUV is electric, with up to 860kW, 0 to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds, 710kW charging and a recorded AMG V8 sound. Here's what we know about it coming to Australia.

Mercedes-AMG has built its first ever full size SUV from scratch, and it is electric. The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV made its world debut in Germany on 17 October 2026, and the top GT 63 version has 860kW, three electric motors and a sound system that plays a recorded AMG V8.

It is one of the most powerful family cars ever made. Here is what it is, what it can do, and what we know about it coming to Australia.

Quick answer: The AMG GT 63 SUV makes 860kW and 2,000Nm, hits 100km/h in 2.7 seconds and can add up to 454km of WLTP range in 10 minutes on a fast enough charger. Mercedes-Benz Australia says it is too early to comment on local timing, and there is no Australian price yet.

What is the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV?

It is the second car on AMG's new AMG.EA electric platform, after the AMG GT 4 door coupe. Unlike past AMG SUVs, which were tuned versions of regular Mercedes models, this one was developed by AMG in Affalterbach from the ground up. It has a low seating position and a sleek roofline, but still offers a full size SUV cabin with a three seat rear bench.

There are three versions: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. The GT 53 opens for orders in Germany first, with the GT 55 and GT 63 following in spring 2027 (northern hemisphere).

Power and performance

  • GT 63: three axial flux motors, 860kW and 2,000Nm, 0 to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds (2.5 seconds measured with a one foot rollout), 0 to 200km/h in 7.2 seconds, 270km/h top speed with the Driver's Package
  • GT 55: three axial flux motors, 600kW and 1,860Nm, 0 to 100km/h in 3.1 seconds
  • GT 53: two motors, 400kW and 800Nm, 0 to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds, 250km/h top speed with the Driver's Package

Mercedes says the GT 63 and GT 55 can hold 530kW continuously, which matters on a racetrack. Many fast EVs can only deliver their peak power for a few seconds before heat cuts it back.

Winner on paper: the GT 63. Few cars of any shape can match 860kW, and none of them have room for five.

Battery, range and charging

The battery uses 800 volt technology and directly cooled cylindrical cells, a design AMG says comes from its Formula 1 know how. There are two sizes, 106kWh and 128kWh net.

  • Up to 700km of WLTP range with the bigger battery
  • Peak DC charging of 600kW (106kWh) or 710kW (128kWh)
  • 10 to 80 per cent in about 11 to 12 minutes
  • Up to 454km of WLTP range added in 10 minutes (GT 63 and GT 55 with the 128kWh pack)
  • 11kW AC charging at home

There is a catch for Australia. Those headline charging speeds need a charger that can deliver 600kW or more, and public chargers here are mostly far slower today. Real world charging times in Australia will be longer until faster chargers arrive.

The fake V8 sound

This is the part everyone is talking about. In the AMGFORCE Sport+ drive mode, the GT 63 and GT 55 play the sound of an AMG V8 through the car's speakers, and the GT 53 plays an AMG six cylinder.

Mercedes says these are not synthetic sounds. They were recorded from real AMG engines, including the AMG GT R, using 16 microphones and more than 100 measurements. The mode also simulates gear changes, lets you "shift" with the paddles, and uses seat shakers so you feel it as well as hear it. A slider lets you turn it down, or off.

Some buyers will love it. Others will ask why an electric car needs to pretend. Either way, it is a big part of AMG's plan to keep its fans as it moves to electric power.

Inside the cabin

The driver gets a 10.2 inch digital instrument display and a 14.0 inch touchscreen angled towards them, and the front passenger gets their own 14 inch screen. There is a three seat rear bench as standard with folding backrests, plus an optional SKY CONTROL glass roof that can switch from clear to opaque. AMG Performance seats and a Burmester 4D sound system are optional.

Is it coming to Australia, and how much?

Mercedes-Benz Australia says it is too early to comment on local timing. There is no Australian price yet, so we will update this story as soon as there is. Given the GT 63 and GT 55 do not start production for overseas markets until spring 2027 (northern hemisphere), an Australian launch is unlikely before late 2027.

Expect it to be priced well into luxury car territory. Remember that on road costs, including stamp duty, will add thousands more on top of the list price.

Should you wait for one?

Wait if: you want the fastest family SUV money can buy, you love AMG and want the newest tech, and you are happy to wait until at least late 2027.

Look elsewhere if: you need a fast luxury SUV now, or you mostly charge at public chargers, as Australia's network cannot yet use its full charging speed.
