Jaguar is back, and it looks nothing like the Jaguars you know. The new Jaguar Type 01 is a four door electric grand tourer with up to 757kW, a claimed 720km of range and no rear window at all. It was revealed in New York on 6 October 2026, it is confirmed for Australia, and local pricing is expected to start at around $300,000 plus on road costs. Here is everything Australian buyers need to know, from specs and timing to how it compares with the big luxury cars it will take on.
Quick answer: The Type 01 is Jaguar's first new car since the brand wound down its old range to reinvent itself as an electric only luxury maker. It has three motors, 757kW and 1,365Nm, 0 to 100km/h in a claimed 3.2 seconds and up to 720km of range (WLTP, Jaguar estimate). Orders open in early 2027, with first deliveries overseas in the second half of 2027. Expect a starting price of around $300,000 plus on road costs in Australia, which puts it up against the BMW i7, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Porsche Taycan.
Our verdict in one line: a bold, genuinely different luxury car with the numbers to back up the drama. It will divide opinion, and that seems to be the point.
What is the Jaguar Type 01?
The Type 01 is the first car from Jaguar's new era. Jaguar wound down its old range of petrol and electric models while it developed an all new electric only line up, and this is the first result. The name means "Type" as a nod to the E-type and other famous Jaguars, "0" for zero tailpipe emissions and "1" because it is the first of a new generation.
It is a large, low four door GT designed, engineered and built in the UK, on a new platform Jaguar calls Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Jaguar describes it as the most powerful, most aerodynamic and most technically advanced Jaguar it has ever made, with more than 360 patent applications.
Is it coming to Australia, and how much will it cost?
Yes. Jaguar Australia has confirmed the Type 01 for local sale, and the expected starting price is around $300,000 plus on road costs. Final Australian pricing and specification will be announced closer to launch. In the UK, Jaguar has confirmed a starting price of £130,000.
Timing:
Orders open globally in early 2027
First customer deliveries are expected in the second half of 2027
Exact Australian order and delivery dates have not been announced yet
At around $300,000, the Type 01 will be well above the Luxury Car Tax threshold, so Luxury Car Tax will be built into the price. Once confirmed pricing is out, we will add NSW, VIC and QLD drive away estimates.

Design: love it or hate it
The Type 01 has a long bonnet, a very low roofline (about 1.4 metres tall), a long tail and a length of more than 5.2 metres, which makes it bigger than a Porsche Taycan. Jaguar says the look draws on the E-type and XJS.
The most talked about detail is that there is no rear window. Instead, a rear camera feeds a digital rear view mirror. It frees the designers to give the car its smooth, unbroken tail, but it will take some getting used to, especially when parking or if the camera lens gets dirty on a wet day.
Other highlights include the wide, thin headlights, slim full width tail lights and a sculpted rear panel Jaguar calls the "Impossible Panel" because it was so hard to manufacture in one piece.
Inside the Type 01
The cabin is split into four individual seats by a central spine that runs from the dashboard to the back seat, finished with brass look trim. Key features include:
24 inch OLED driver display that runs the width ahead of the driver, operating Jaguar's new infotainment system
Seven inch smartphone style touchscreen between the front seats for the most used controls
Panoramic Soundbar: a full width speaker bar across the dashboard, plus "Sensory Audio" seats that you can feel as well as hear
Four seats only, so it is not a five seat family sedan replacement
How it compares with its likely rivals
Australian pricing for the Type 01 is not final, so this is a guide based on today's prices for the cars it will most likely be shopped against.
BMW i7 60 xDrive: $306,900 plus on road costs, up to 727km of range (WLTP), five seats and a rear seat Theatre Screen. The more practical, proven electric limousine.
Mercedes-Benz S 450 4MATIC: $264,200 plus on road costs. The traditional petrol luxury benchmark, with no range or charging concerns.
Audi RS e-tron GT: from $264,083 plus on road costs. The sporty electric four door that is closest in spirit to the Type 01, but lower and smaller inside.
On paper, the Type 01 is more powerful than all of them and matches the i7 for range. Where it will need to prove itself is in ride comfort, cabin quality and dealer support, given Jaguar has been absent from new car showrooms for a while. What to think about before you put your name down
Resale value is unknown. It is an all new model from a brand in the middle of a reinvention. Early luxury electric cars have often lost value quickly in Australia, so budget for that.
No rear window. Try the camera mirror on a test drive at night and in rain before you commit.
Four seats. If you regularly need a fifth seat, look elsewhere.
Wait for the details. Final Australian pricing, equipment, warranty and ANCAP status are all still to come.
Should you be excited?
Yes, if: you want something truly different from the German establishment, you value design and performance, and you can wait until at least late 2027.
Maybe not, if: you need a practical five seat luxury car now, or you want a car with a proven track record on resale and reliability.
Our take: the Type 01 is the most interesting new Jaguar in decades. The specs are strong, the price is lower than many expected, and the design is brave. We will update this article as soon as Jaguar Australia confirms final pricing and specification.
